Choose between a fragrant and fabulous experience or a fascinating and thrilling one as we visit David Austin Roses or RAF Cosford
David Austin Roses has developed from humble beginnings in the Shropshire countryside into a world renowned centre for rose breeding over the past 60 year, ever since David Austin first picked up his pruners with the aim to create a more beautiful rose.
With 6 stunning rose gardens, a large plant centre where you can purchase a rose or 2 to take home, a restaurant and delightful tea rooms now all available at the family farm, our visit is sure to be a day out not to be missed.
And speaking of not to be missed, the centrepiece of the visit must surely be the rose gardens, considered to be some of the finest rose gardens in the world.
As one of only three gardens in England to have received the 'Award of Garden Excellence' from the World Federation of Rose Societies, it must be seen to be appreciated.
Set in multiple hangers, the RAF museum at Cosford is home to a vast array of over 150 aircraft and vehicles including WW1 period aircraft such as the Sopwith Pup biplane, the world's oldest Spitfire, the Hurricane, the "wooden wonder" Mosquito, famous German WW2 aircraft such as the Messerschmitt BF109, Focke Wulf FW190 and Junkers 88 through to huge cold war planes such as the famous V bomber force (Vulcan, Valiant and Victor), the English Electric Lightning, the Harrier jump jet and the mighty Lockheed C130 Hercules.
Ground vehicles range from Centurion and Leopard tanks, the iconic "Green Goddesses", equally iconic period cars such as the BMC Mini and Morris Traveller to oddities such as the not quite so iconic Trabant! and VW Beetle amongst many more.
Combine this with a large collection of flight memorabilia and interactive displays, including the flight jacket worn by James Nicolson VC DFC , the only recipient of the Victoria Cross awarded for gallantry during the Battle of Britain in August 1940, an exhibition showcasing the diversity and history of the first 100 years of the RAF from 1918-2018, the history of RAF Cosford from 1938 - present day and many more exhibits and displays.
With an opportunity to get some lunch at the Cold War Cafe and maybe a Souvenir at the shop to round the day off, a visit to RAF Cosford makes for an educational and fascinating day out.
